3 Sugar Detox Tips

It’s the day after Halloween and all the mini chocolates, witches hats and scary masks are gone. Let’s find a healthy way to come down from that sugar high so we can get our bodies back on track!

Did You Know?!

Sugar is a form of drug. There I said it! Research says our brains are hardwired for pleasure and sugar works like any addictive drug. There have been brain scans that show sugar consumption affects the brain in ways similar to drugs (www.healthline.com) So that’s why we crave that chocolate bar or cupcake staring at us from the bakery window or muffin (which is really a cupcake in disguise!) Our brains are thinking pleasure! I know I always crave something sweet after I have a meal (specifically lunch or dinner) and I give in to it, a small square of dark chocolate but still, I crave it!

So let’s start with 3 simple ways to get our bodies back into homeostasis with leafy greens for fiber, nutrient-filled water & a little exercise!

Tip #1 for – Eat Your Greens!

All that sugar encourages unfriendly bacteria (like candida) to flourish in your gut, leading to an inflammatory response that brings skin breakouts, bloating and low energy with it. Fiber-rich leafy greens are your closest ally—they’ll restore balance to your gut and flood your body with detoxifying compounds. Make a batch of my Hearty Minestrone Soup and use bone broth in place of vegetable broth for additional healing properties.

Tip #2 – Rehydrate!

Yes, water is essential but today we are going for water with electrolytes to replenish your system with crucial salts. In a nutshell: Once electrolytes (think calcium, potassium, magnesium, and plain old table salt) are in our bodies, they dissolve into positive and negative charges. These charges have two main functions: Regulating the flow of water in and out of cells, and sparking nerve impulses. Without electrolytes, “our cells would shrivel up and die, or burst from being too full,” So yea, let’s drink those electrolytes! I love the brand Flow.

Tip #3 – Let’s Get Moving

You may not feel like it from the sugar hangover but if you get moving even for 10 minutes your body will thank you! The first 3 minutes will feel like torture but you can do anything for 10 minutes like my quick strength circuit above or even a brisk 10-minute walk. Who knows, after 10 minutes those endorphins will kick in and you might go for 10 more!

None of us are perfect and that’s exactly how it should be! So enjoy the Halloween treats with family and friends and don’t feel guilty the next day. You may feel like you are in a bit of a fog but follow these 3 tips and you will be well on your way to feeling better!
