2 Tests You Should Be Checking for Blood Sugar Control

OK let’s get into these 2 important blood tests for keeping your insulin in check. Remember - you are your best advocate! So even if your Dr. says your labs look ‘normal’ look at them yourself and check the range. Are you on the higher end? If so, now is the time to take action - not when you are in the high range and then the prescription pad gets whipped out!

A1C Test

First Test - A1C

What is the A1c Test?

The A1c test, also known as the hemoglobin A1c or HbA1c test, measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Unlike daily blood sugar tests, the A1c provides a broader picture of your blood glucose management, which is especially useful for identifying long-term patterns.

Why is it important?

The A1c test is essential for detecting prediabetes or diabetes. For those already diagnosed with diabetes, it helps in assessing how well your current treatment plan is working. Maintaining an optimal A1c level is crucial for preventing complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and nerve problems.

*A1c Test Ranges:

  • Normal: Below 5.7% (Most Functional MD’s think this is too high-aim for below 5.4% to risk assess getting into the prediabetes range)

  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%

  • Diabetes: 6.5% or higher

*These ranges are generally used to guide diagnosis and management, but your healthcare provider may adjust these based on your individual health situation.

Fasting Glucose

Second Test - Fasting Glucose

What is the Fasting Glucose Test?

The Fasting Glucose test measures your blood sugar levels after an overnight fast, usually about 8-12 hours. This test gives a snapshot of your blood glucose levels when you're not influenced by recent meals or snacks.

Why is it important?

A fasting glucose test is often one of the first steps in diagnosing diabetes or prediabetes. It can reveal how efficiently your body manages glucose when it's in a fasting state. Consistently high fasting glucose levels can indicate insulin resistance, a condition that often precedes the development of type 2 diabetes.

*Fasting Glucose Ranges:

Normal: 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L)

Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L)

Diabetes: 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher

*These ranges are generally used to guide diagnosis and management, but your healthcare provider may adjust these based on your individual health situation.

Low Glycemic Foods

Why Should You Monitor These Tests?

Both the A1c and Fasting Glucose tests are essential tools in understanding how well your body is managing blood sugar. By keeping these levels in check, you can take proactive steps to reduce your risk of developing serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and more.

If you haven't had these tests done recently, consider scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider. Early detection and proper management are key to maintaining your health and well-being.
